TC21

Brief

TC21 Material Characteristics

  • Phase Transition: Phase transition occurs between 950-960°C
  • Original Microstructure: Consists primarily of equiaxed, spherical primary α phase, fine needle-like secondary α phase, and β matrix
  • Nominal Composition: Ti-6Al-2Zr-2Sn-2Mo-1.5Cr-2Nb
  • Properties: One of the titanium alloys in China with good matching comprehensive mechanical properties of high strength and toughness

Applications

  • Aerospace: Used in various aerospace applications such as wing joint structural components, fuselage and landing gear connection frames, engine suspension joints, and manufacturing of critical load-bearing components with high strength and durability requirements

Research Findings

  • Solution Treatment: Investigated the influence of solution treatment temperature on the microstructure of TC21 titanium alloy within the range of 880-950°C
  • Microstructural Analysis: Utilized optical microscopy (OM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to analyze the effect of heat treatment temperature on the formation of blocky α phase in TC21 titanium alloy
  • Observations:
    • Blocky α phase observed at 880°C and 900°C, while not observed at 930°C and 950°C
    • EBSD analysis revealed a Burgers orientation relationship between the large blocky α phase and its adjacent β phase
    • Microhardness reached its minimum value after solution treatment at 900°C, increasing with temperatures above 900°C
