In Baoji, the titanium industry is the leading sector. There are currently over 300 enterprises involved in research, production, processing, trade, and distribution (with 50 recognized as high-tech enterprises). Among these, 65 are large-scale titanium processing enterprises, and over 50 are large-scale trade enterprises, employing more than 30,000 people. Baoji’s titanium production accounts for approximately 10% of the world’s total titanium production, with exports making up about 5% of the international market. The market share for titanium civilian products is 75%, and the market share for titanium powder is 65.7%.
Additionally, Baoji hosts over 40 enterprises in the tungsten and molybdenum sectors, producing a total of 750 tons. Currently, Baoji’s zirconium and hafnium nuclear materials occupy 70% of the domestic market.
Baoji Titanium Processing Industry
In Baoji and Xi’an, the production of titanium materials accounts for over 80% of China’s titanium-processed material market. The base products have achieved significant scale in various areas including titanium processed materials, titanium alloys, titanium and titanium alloy powders, titanium equipment, zirconium, hafnium, tantalum, and niobium materials.
Titanium processed materials: This category includes titanium ingots, titanium forgings, discs and rings, special-shaped materials, and their subsequent processed forms such as rods, wires, plates, strips, and foils.
Titanium and titanium alloy composite materials: This includes plates, rods, and tubes.
Titanium-nickel products: These encompass heating (cooling) tubes, mesh plates and baskets, titanium handicrafts, and titanium anode plates.
Titanium equipment: This covers medical surgical instruments, artificial femoral heads, artificial wrist joints, knee joints, artificial dental implants, cranial repair materials, pacemakers, artificial lungs, blood dialyzers, as well as pharmaceutical and chemical equipment, heat exchangers, and electroplating equipment.
Titanium civilian products: These include titanium golf club heads for sports and leisure, titanium bicycle frames, eyeglasses, watches, washing machines, and various fishing gear.
Titanium powder and titanium alloy powder: These are used in industrial filters and other applications.
Zirconium and hafnium rare metal nuclear materials: These materials are used in high-temperature resistant tungsten, molybdenum materials, and corrosion-resistant niobium and tantalum plates.
Rare and precious metals: This includes a series of palladium, platinum, rhodium, iridium, and ruthenium used as catalysts in the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.
Titanium alloy research and development
The development of the titanium industry in Baoji has a long history. Over the past decade, our research and development capabilities have rapidly improved. We have established several national-level centers, laboratories, and bases related to titanium. These include the National Engineering Research Center for Rare Metal Material Processing, the National Key Laboratory for Rapid Solidification, the National Strength Laboratory, and the National Key Laboratory for Composite Materials. As a result, we have developed strong capabilities for independent innovation in titanium alloys.
